PermalinkSo… We're about to move. I have a fabulous mulberry tree in the yard, which I had thought to take with us… but when I actually looked, it has grown far more than I'd realised in the last 12 months. So now, it's way too big to move. I have heard tell that mulberries can be quite variable as to taste, and given that this one tastes so good, I'd like to try taking it with us in some form. I've heard rumours of people taking cuttings of mulberry trees with some success, and I was wondering if anyone has tried it, or has any advice?
Thanks in Advance:-) Fe

Sorry, I know nothing about mulberries or propagating trees in general, but my completely unqualified gut feeling is that you may be able to do it from a cutting. Is it an upright mulberry or one of those weeping ones? We've got one of the latter in our yard. The trailing branches grow like you wouldn't believe. They're so triffid-like that I can't help thinking that cutting a bit off one of them and sticking it in the ground would probably achieve something.
Hmm… I think it's one of the upright sort, the branches don't really weep, but they're still fairly flexible (because it's not that old)… so it gives a feeling of weeping…
(I see what you mean about not being able to see the comment you're replying to—which probably means you won't get notifications about replies to your comments, either. Ooh! And I just realised that underscore on each side of a word makes it actually italicised:-) )
I haven't tried it, but my "tree and shrub expert" book says to plant 1ft cuttings outside in autumn – so you may be just right to get them now, or soon. You could put several cuttings in a pot, for portability to take along. Fingers crossed!
Just testing whether email notifications work. You should get an email about this comment on your post. Let us know!
Another email notification test. This one should have working links (eg. my name and the post, above, and "open in inbox" below.)
In the end, my mum was coming by, so she took some cuttings (we've been kind of distracted with the packing!) Now, some weeks later, they're shooting forth leaves wildly, and mum said she has to keep picking fruit/flowers off them! So it's looking good:-)
And here's a reply using the reply button!
So far so good, they're still growing strong:-) I think she's about to pot them on into individual pots:-)
