Basil seedlings got planted out into various corners around the tomatoes and tomatillos. I notice that the ends of the spring onions that we tucked in amongst the tomatoes are also starting to sprout, w00t. I wonder how many times you can replant spring onions? Are they immortal? If we buy a few more bunches and keep planting the ends, will we maybe never have to buy spring onions again?

In other news, two chilli plants in the smallest pots got put in a big container, along with a couple of bush beans and a sprinkling of rocket.

I went and chucked beans and/or rocket all over the place today. I just felt like they were things that could fit into some odd corners, and that the beans would be good nitrogen fixers and the rocket would act as a bit of a green mulch, since we scraped off all that sugarcane crap that seemed to be leaching joy from whatever it was near. I figure beans and rocket are quick and easy and cheap and cheerful and I'm not too committed to them… if they don't work out like I hope, I'll not feel too sad pulling them out. My container gardening is the handwaviest.

I also made three smallish tubs (all flattish shaped containers) of "salad mix": rocket, lettuce, endive, mustard, and mizuna mixed up and sprinkled over the soil, raked around a little, and watered in. I've put them in a corner that's mostly shady, near the worm farm, and I'm hoping to be able to harvest a bunch of them young and tender, then just leave a few in each pot to keep picking leaves off til they bolt, and then start again.

I wish the chard/silverbeet that's gone to seed would hurry up and dry and drop its seeds so we could re-use the container. GET ON WITH IT.

The weed tea from a few weeks back is well-steeped and delightfully stinky. Gave everything a good water with it tonight and topped up the bucket with a bit more water. Another two weeks and the weed solids will be ready to chuck somewhere else and start a new batch.
