Nasturtium is an edible flower and popular companion plant that does well in poor soil and dry conditions. It can be grown as a companion plant, an ornamental, and, depending on the variety, a ground cover. Climbing varieties require trellising. Nasturtium lures aphids away from beans and it's attractive flowers draw beneficial insects that prey on aphids. The flowers and leaves are edible and have a spicy flavor. The plant can also be grown as a salad green: harvest the young shoots when 2-3 leaves have developed. If starting from seed, scarify the seed by gently rubbing it with a nail file to soften the hard seed coat and aid germination before sowing.
